What is a "Mode 3" charging cable?

Mode 3 describes the AC charging at a permanently installed wallbox or charging station to IEC 61851-1. Vehicle and charging point communicate via control lines in the cable (e.g. Control/Proximity Pilot), check earthing and interlocking and only switch power onwhen everything is securely connected. In Europe Type 2 the AC standard plug (IEC 62196-2), therefore Mode 3 cable typically type 2 ↔ type 2.

FAQ

Is Mode 3 AC or DC?

Mode 3 is AC charging (alternating current). DC fast charging falls under Mode 4 (e.g. CCS) and uses permanently attached cables at the station.

Do I need my own cable at public AC charging points?

Usually yes. At many AC charging points you plug in its Mode 3 cable between the column (type 2 socket) and the vehicle (type 2 socket). DC fast chargers have the cable permanently installed.

Does the cable fit all type 2 vehicles?

Yes, type 2 is the standard for AC charging in the EU. The actual charging capacity is determined by Vehicle on-board charger and Wallboxnot the cable alone.

How weatherproof is the cable?

With IP44 it is protected against splash water. The Temperature-resistant outer jacket (-30 °C to +50 °C) is limited to Regular outdoor use designed.

What is the advantage of a standard-compliant Mode 3 cable?

Compatibility & securityIEC standards (62196-1/-2, 61851-1) ensure that interlocking, communication and protection mechanisms function reliably - at the wallbox and public charging station.
